Collagen is a form of protein in the body. In fact, it’s the most abundant structural protein in animals. A structural protein is one that makes up the structure or framework of your cells and tissues. There are 28 known types of collagen, with type I collagen accounting for 90% of the collagen in the human body. Glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline are the most prevalent amino acids in collagen. Collagen's triple-helix structure is composed of these amino acids.†[1]
Collagen is found in connective tissue, skin, tendons, bones, and cartilage. It provides structural support to tissues and plays critical roles in cellular processes, including tissue repair, immune response, cellular communication, and many different tissue processes. Collagen is produced and maintained by connective tissue cells called fibroblasts. As people age, their collagen becomes fragmented, their fibroblast function is impaired, and their collagen production slows down.†[2]
Benefits of Collagen and Skin
A common use of collagen supplements is to promote skin health. There is some evidence that suggests collagen supplements may improve certain aspects of skin health and appearance. Collagen supplements are commonly used to promote healthy skin. Certain aspects of skin health and appearance may be improved by taking collagen supplements.†[3]
Certain types of collagen may modestly help improve the appearance of aging skin. Various placebo-controlled studies using hydrolyzed pig or fish-derived type I and type III collagen have shown reduced wrinkle appearance, especially around the eyes, and improved elasticity in the skin.†[4]
Some studies support the claim that collagen supplements will lead to modestly increased hair density, but there are mixed results regarding collagen's impact on nails. While some studies report an increase in nail growth and reduced brittleness, others show no change.†[5]
Bone Benefits of Collagen
Daily collagen supplements may make your bones denser, slowing the aging process that makes them brittle and promoting the production of new bone. Your bones are mainly made up of collagen, which gives them structure and strength. A person's bone mass decreases as they age, just as collagen in their bodies deteriorates. Osteoporosis may result due to low bone density and a higher risk of bone fractures.†[6]
Collagen supplements may help inhibit the bone breakdown that leads to osteoporosis and conditions similar to it. Study participants took either a calcium supplement with 5 grams of collagen daily or a calcium supplement without collagen. Study participants who took a calcium and collagen supplement had significantly lower blood levels of proteins that contribute to bone breakdown than those who took only calcium.†[7]
Supports Heart and Organ Health
Your arteries, the blood vessels that carry blood from your heart to the rest of your body, are made up of collagen. Without enough collagen, the arteries may become less flexible and elastic. Atherosclerosis is a disease characterized by narrowing of your arteries caused by a lack of collagen and other contributing factors. Heart attacks and strokes can result from this condition and other health-related problems.†[8] [9]
Muscle Recovery and Growth
In addition to being the most abundant protein in the body, collagen is also an imperative component of skeletal muscle. Collagen supplements can increase muscle mass in people with sarcopenia, the loss of muscle mass that occurs with age. Everyone will go through this at some point as it naturally happens. Adding in a collagen supplement can see a reversal and slowing of said event. Research suggests that supplemental collagen may promote the synthesis of muscle proteins such as creatine, as well as stimulate muscle growth after exercise. †[10] [11]
Things to Know When Taking Collagen
It takes a long time for collagen to turn over. Hence, no matter what your goal is for collagen, it will take at least 8 weeks to see results, possibly longer depending on the individual user.
For bone health, some studies use longer periods, such as 12 months, to assess collagen's effects.
Collagen Deficiency and Symptoms
You naturally lose collagen production as you age. Collagen also becomes more fragmented and loosely distributed. Consequently, wrinkles and dry, sagging skin appear as characteristic signs of aging. The integrity of the collagen in the skeletal system also diminishes with age, resulting in weaker bones.†[12]
Despite the inevitable loss of collagen as we age, certain dietary and lifestyle factors can speed up this process. In addition to degrading collagen, smoking cigarettes causes wrinkles and a loss of elasticity in the skin. Additionally, excessive drinking has been shown to damage skin repair mechanisms and reduce collagen production, which speeds up skin aging.†[13][14]
Furthermore, a diet high in added sugar and ultra-processed foods may contribute to premature aging by contributing to a process called glycation, which reduces collagen turnover and interferes with collagen's ability to interact with surrounding cells and proteins. Wearing sunscreen and avoiding excessive sun exposure will prevent signs of premature aging as well.†[15]
